Sun-print napkins: a family summer project
I made these sun-prints with the whole family using a cyanotype fabric that reacts to light just like camera film (this fabric can be purchased at blueprintsonfabric.com).
We gathered leaves and flowers from our yard—hydrangeas, leftover trillium leaves, bamboo leaves, ferns, calendula, raspberry leaves, and weeds.

I wanted to make something with the kids, and since the air quality isn’t the best outside because of the nearby wildfires, I brought out this bag of pre-cut cyanotype fabrics that I’ve been meaning to use for a while. With the sun high in the sky and with the recent hot weather, I felt it was a perfect activity to do to get the whole family together.
My eldest did all the flower prints, which I find I admire and gravitate to the most! They feel the most spontaneous and unstudied. I plan on leaving the edges unfinished and would like to decorate the table with these for our big Christmas dinner later this year. These sun-print napkins will be a beautiful reminder of the long, blossoming summer days in the middle of winter. I hope everyone is being safe and staying cool. As always, take care, my friends.
