Elegant Archery

Acrylic and pastel painting study of a pink clad archer on horseback.
Painting of a pink clad archer drawing back on their bow on horseback. Green shoots rise up in a reddish clay background.

I was beyond thrilled to start and finish this archer study in one day. I’ve been busy with the kids this summer and I have not made drawing and painting a priority lately, but I was able to carve out some time to play around with some new art supplies a couple weeks ago and this was the result! I’ve been thinking of the phrase “elegant archery” for a while and this was the image in my head that I’ve been meaning to put on paper and sketch out. It‘s an image that I want to embody more in my life right now, precision and a kind of effortlessness. I plan on making more archers on horseback and continue to paint them in this looser style, keeping the colors bright and vibrant. I also want to draw and paint more horses!

Light pencil sketch of a running horse. Still remember the lessons from those How To Draw a Horse books!

I was continually drawing them as a child since I was convinced that any artist worth their salt would know how to draw a horse from memory! I‘d like to cater to more of my inner child’s obsessions, just to see how I measure up as an adult. This could be very humbling. I will surely document as I go, but in the meantime, take care, my friends.
